The knockout stage of the Champions League has started and it could be a great time to place a top goalscorer bet whilst there are still 16 teams left in the competition
The Champions League is the biggest competition in club football. To finish the top goal scorer in the competition is a great achievement. The last time someone scored more than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi was Kaka in 2006/07, showing how tough it is to win. Ronaldo is the all-time leader in Champions League goals. He’s scored 128 goals and finished top scorer on seven different seasons.
This season, however, it’s looking that finally, someone else will take the top spot for the season. Messi and Ronaldo haven’t been up to their normal goalscoring form and it’s looking like a battle between to Bundesliga players.
We’ll look at this season’s top scorers and who has the best chance of taking the crown of last seasons winner Lionel Messi.
Robert Lewandowski – 10 goals – 1/9 (Betway odds)
The Polish striker has been in top form in the seasons Champions League. He has scored his 10 goals in just five games with four of them coming against Red Star Belgrade. They are favourites to beat Chelsea and get through to the next round. Should they do so this gives Lewandowski the chance to score even more goals.
Bayern are the third favourites to win the competition at 13/2 and are expected to go far. Lewandowski has 36 goals in all competitions this season so will be confident of adding to that.
Erling Braut Haaland – 10 goals – 4/1 (Betwat odds)
Haaland has come from nowhere and is now one of the most exciting players in the world. He joined Dortmund in the January transfer window after a very successful start to the season at RB Salzburg.
He scored two more last night against PSG to give his side a 2-1 lead going into the next leg. This has put his side as the favourites to go through to the quarter-finals at 17/20. To put into context how well he’s been doing, he has the same amount of goals as Barcelona have in this seasons competition. A team with Messi, Suarez and Griezzman to name a few…
With 39 goals all season Haaland will be looking to add more at PSG in the next leg and considering he has the same amount as Lewandowski he could be a great bet at 4/1.
Lionel Messi – two goals – 20/1 (Betway odds)
Had it been any other player on two goals, they would more likely be at 200/1 than 20/1. However, given that it’s the best player to ever play the game you wouldn’t put it past him. Barca have got Napoli in the next round who are struggling this season.
Barcelona could still get to the final of the competition which would give Messi seven games to catch up with the other two. Should they get knocked out then Messi will be confident of keeping his top scorer trophy.
However, with only 19 goals this season he will have to pick up the goal-scoring form to give it a real go!
Raheem Sterling – five goals – 20/1 – The Man City forward is playing in the side that are the favourites for this seasons competition, priced at 4/1. He is in bad form of late but has a knack of being in the right place at the right time.
Kylian Mbappe – five goals – 25/1 – Mbappe is being tipped to be the next Ballon d’Or winner. He has to help his side to turn round to 2-1 first-leg loss to give him a chance of finishing top goal scorer.
Betway has odds available on a load of other Champions League markets and will do throughout the rest of the competition.
