Ben Stokes Named ICC Player Of The Year

England’s cricket hero of the summer Ben Stokes is named the International Cricket Councils Player Of The Year

The England all-rounder was named as this year’s winner of the Sir Garfield Trophy. The award, which is named after West Indies great Sir Garfield Sobers, was first given out in 2004.

The winner of the award is chosen by 56 different individuals from the cricketing world. They included the captains of the test playing nations (10), members of the elite panel of ICC umpires and referees (18), and then certain prominent former players and cricket correspondents (28).

The award can be split between multiple people should players receive the same amount of votes. This has only happened once since 2004 and that was in 2005. Both Jaques Kallis and Freddie Flintoff got the same amount of votes.

Three players have won the award twice, they are Ricky Ponting, Mitchell Johnson and Virat Kholi.

Stokes has had a fantastic year and it started with the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He helped guide England to their first-ever World Cup win and his best performance came in the final. Stokes hit 84 not out in the final and that included batting in the super over, which got him the Man Of The Match award.

Throughout the tournament, Stokes featured with the bat. He averaged 66 runs throughout which was the highest average out of any of the England squad. He also got the most 50’s along with Al Hasan and Kholi with five.

Next up for Stokes was The Ashes. Even though it wasn’t a series that’ll live long in the memory of cricket fans, Stokes performance in the third test. He was 135 not out to help rescue England at the time and keep the series alive for the next test. On top of this, he hit 13 sixes, more than anyone else in the 2019 Ashes Series.

Going into 2020 Stokes will be looking forward to The Hundred, the new cricket competition starting this year, and the T20 World Cup. Stokes is playing for The Northern Superchargers in The Hundred and they are one of the favourites for the competition at 4/1. In his side are Aaron Finch, Adil Rashid and David Willey to name a few. This is an exciting new competition that Stokes would love to win in its first year.

After that is the T20 World Cup. If England could do a World Cup double that would be unbelievable. Australia are the favourites at 5/2 with England just behind at 7/2, along with India. England have a lot of firepower in there squad and winning the T20 World Cup is definitely achievable!
