Ben Stokes’ Year
Stokes’ year really took off during the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He put in several fantastic performances to help guide his side to their first-ever World Cup trophy. His best game was in the final where he was given the Man Of The Match award. He put in a fantastic batting performance as well as leading the side in the super-over.
Just weeks after this, he then put in a 135, not out against Australia in The Ashes. His performance was regarded by many as one of the greatest Test batsman performances ever! He held in there with Jack Leach it what was a fantastic sporting moment.
This all comes after it appeared Stokes England cricket career was over. In 2017 he was arrested after fighting in Bristol with fellow cricketer Alex Hales. However, Stokes was never charged after a long court case and return to England a year later. You could see in his speech this was something that his family and wife, in particular, helped him through.
In winning the award, Stokes is the first cricketer to win it since Freddie Flintoff in 2005, when England won The Ashes. This wasn’t Stokes’ only award. His side also won Team Of The Year for their World Cup heroics. On top of that, Jos Buttler hitting the stumps in the super-over to win the competition was awarded the Greatest Sporting Moment.
Looking ahead now, Stokes will have his mind focused on the 2020 T20 World Cup. England go into it as one of the favourites at 7/2, with India at the same price. Australia are the favourites though at 3/1. Stokes will be hoping to perform heroics again and maybe even with The Sports Personality Of The Year Award for the second year in a row.
