After four very exciting Champions League quarter-finals, were now down to our final four with some huge teams knocked out of the competition!
Over the weekend the final games of the Champions League quarter-finals were played. Some huge teams were put up against each other, with Barcelona vs Bayer Munich the pick of ties. Going into the four games last week, many thought the ties were going to be fairly straight forward. All the favourites in each of them looked nailed on to win and make it into the semi-finals, oh how wrong we were!
The first game was PSG vs Atalanta. This was looking like it would be a goal-fest, but the French side had to grind this one out. In a side full of superstars, it was centre back Marquinhos and ex-Stoke striker Choupo-Moting who came up with the good in the 90th and 93rd minute.
RB Leipzig surprised everyone when they beat Atletico Madrid. The German side took an early lead and then got a winner in the 88th minute to knock out the side who beat last years winners in the previous round.
Barcelona was embarrassed by Bayern Munich. Hansi Flicks’ side tore apart the Spanish side and beat them 8-2 in what could become a turning point in Barcelona’s history. Bayern were the favourites for this one, but no one saw an 8-2 demolition happening! Barca will just be thankful there were no fans in the ground to witness it!
The final game of the quater-finals was Man City vs Lyon. City were the joint-favourites for the competition going into this game. However, an early goal from Lyon and an awful miss from Sterling late on contributed to a 3-1 win for the underdogs. The French side took advantage and went on to win 3-1.
RB Leipzig vs PSG
The first game of the semi-finals see’s these two sides meet in a competitive match for the first time ever. This is an incredible achievement for Leipzig, as the club was only founded in 2009. This is only the second time PSG have been in the semi-finals of the competition, the last was in 1995 when they were beaten by AC Milan.
PSG are the favourites to qualify from this game, with BoyleSports having them priced at 2/5, with Leipzig at 15/8. It looks like PSG are going to have Mbappe fit from the start in this game. If he starts and Neymar plays as well as he did against Atalanta, this should be a great night for the French side.
Leipzig though, aren’t there just to make up the numbers. They played very well against Atletico, who have one of the best defences in the world. This should be an exciting game and one in which we can see PSG coming out on top.
Lyon vs Bayern Munich
The second semi-final is also a French vs German game. Lyon wouldn’t have expected to get this far, especially when they drew Man City in the previous round. However, if they can go and beat them 3-1, what’s to say they can’t be Bayern?!
Bayern though come into this one off one of the most confidence-boosting games you could imagine. Beating anyone 8-2 is a great result, but doing it in the Champions League, against a side with Lionel Messi in is something else. Bayern have looked incredible all season and that’s why they are 1/12 to qualify. BoyleSports don’t really fancy Lyon to cause another upset, they have priced them at 13/2 to make the final.
Even though Lyon beat City, we can’t see them doing this again. Bayern have world-class players all over the pitch and will surely be too much for Lyon.
